1980s

The Dodge Spirit, a compact-to-midsize sedan produced by Chrysler Corporation from 1989 to 1995, was a standout vehicle during the transition to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles in the US. It succeeded the Dodge Lancer and was based on Chrysler's AA-body platform, which it shared with the Plymouth Acclaim and Chrysler LeBaron sedans. The design is based on Chrysler's successful K-car platform, which helped the firm recover from bankruptcy in the early 1980s. The Spirit had a plain, boxy look, a traditional four-door sedan with seating for up to five people.

The Spirit was offered with a variety of engines that provided varying degrees of performance and efficiency. The base versions were powered by the Chrysler 2.5-liter inline-four engine. The performance-oriented versions, such as the Spirit R/T, were available with powerful powertrains, including a turbocharged 2.2-liter inline-four engine. As the competition from both domestic and foreign manufacturers grew during the 1990s, the Spirit was finally phased out in favor of the Dodge Stratus, which was introduced in 1995 as part of Chrysler's all-new JA platform range.
