The Dodge Omni, produced by Chrysler from 1977 to 1990, was a significant milestone in the automotive industry. It was first released in response to the oil crisis of the 1970s, it was the company's first front-wheel-drive car and signaled a change in design philosophy. The transverse engine arrangement and front-wheel drive of the Omni, which was based on the European-designed Simca Horizon, allowed for increased interior space economy and spaciousness. Its hatchback design offered a useful compromise between luggage capacity and compact size.
The Omni was initially powered by a 1.7-liter inline-four engine from Volkswagen, paired with either a four-speed manual or a three-speed automatic transmission. Chrysler later debuted its 2.2-liter inline-four engine, which enhanced output while preserving reasonable fuel economy. The most remarkable performance variant was the Omni GLH (Goes Like Hell), and it has a turbocharged version of the 2.2-liter engine that transformed the Omni into a hot hatch capable of competing with sportier vehicles of the era. The Omni, which attracted cost-conscious consumers and acted as a model for upcoming Chrysler models, was essential to Chrysler's survival during a period of financially turbulent time.
