What is the Brake Caliper's Purpose?
The brake caliper's primary function is to assist the brake pads' application of force to slow down or stop the vehicle. It serves as a housing for the brake pads and provides a framework for their movement. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure is generated in the brake system, which is transmitted to the brake caliper, causing it to squeeze the brake pads against the brake rotor or drum, depending on the type of braking system.
Other Parts of the Brake System
Brake Rotor
The brake rotor, also known as a brake disc, works with the brake pads to stop the vehicle by generating friction.
Brake Pads
Brake pads press against the rotor to generate the necessary friction to stop the car. They have wear indicators that emit a squealing sound when they need replacement.
Brake Lines
Brake lines transport the brake fluid between the master cylinder, calipers, and wheel cylinders through metal or rubber conduits.
